Top 5 ingredients to avoid in skin care and why

When it comes to skincare, what we put on our skin matters just as much as what we put in our bodies. On my own healing journey, I became hyper-aware of the ingredients in beauty products and I want to share the top five I avoid to keep my skin safe and healthy.

1. Parabens

Parabens are preservatives used to extend the shelf life of cosmetics. Though they keep products fresh, parabens have been linked to hormone disruption because they can mimic estrogen in the body. For those of us healing or sensitive to chemicals, avoiding parabens is a smart choice.

2. Synthetic Fragrances

While a product that smells amazing is tempting, many synthetic fragrances are made from chemicals that can irritate the skin or trigger allergic reactions. Plus, the term “fragrance” on labels often hides a cocktail of undisclosed ingredients. I prefer natural essential oils for scent, they’re gentler and come with added benefits.

3. Sulfates (SLS/SLES)

Sulfates are detergents that create the foam in cleansers and shampoos. While satisfying, they can strip natural oils and damage the skin’s protective barrier, leading to dryness and sensitivity. I choose sulfate-free formulas that cleanse gently without compromising skin health.

4. Phthalates

Often found in fragrances and plastic packaging, phthalates are chemicals suspected of interfering with hormone function. Because they’re not always listed explicitly on labels, it’s another reason to opt for clean, transparent brands.

5. Formaldehyde Releasers

Used as preservatives, these ingredients slowly release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. Products containing these can increase the risk of skin irritation and other health concerns, so I steer clear.

Being mindful of these ingredients has been essential in my own healing process and creating products I trust. When you choose skincare, read labels carefully, ask questions, and prioritize your well-being.

If you’re looking for beauty products that respect your body and support healing, I’d love to introduce you to my gentle, safe blends made with care and intention.

Here’s to glowing safely, inside and out.
